Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to establish the clinical effectiveness of trimebutine maleate (Polybutine¢ç) in the treatment of patients with irritable colon syndrome.
One hundred milligrams of trimebutine maleate was given orally before each meal (three times a day) for three weeks to each patients. The total number of subjects was 24 patients (male: 9 cases, female: 15cases) from 20 year old to 67 year old. All subjects were patients visiting the out-patient clinic of Yonsei University College of Medicine with the symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation and/or feeling of abdominal distension in moderate or severe degree. These patients had barium enema study and/or sigmoidoscopy and proved that they had no organic changes in that studies.
Out of the 24 patients with irritable colon syndrome, the symptoms were completely disappeared or improved after treatment in 20 cases (83.3%). Among 22 patients having abdominal pain, 19 cases (86.4%) were improved. Diarrhea was improved in 11 cases (91. 7%) with this drug among 12 patients. Constipation were disappeared in 4 cases(80%) among 5 patients having that symptoms. All 3 patients having abdominal fulling sensation were improved.
There was no serious untoward effect in all cases but tenesmus in two patients; one could not tolerate this drug and the other tolerated well with mild tenesmus.
